Canoes on the river Hooghly

Canoes are mostly used by poor fishermen on the river Hooghly in West Bengal, India. The Hooghly river is a distributary of the River Ganges. None of these canoes is motored. Long oars are used to move the boat along.

This is a silhouette of a long canoe on the river Hooghly in Kolkata. Two men at each end of the boat can be seen with long oars. In the background are some buildings in Kolkatta, West  Bengal. These are fishermen.

Here are two boats on the shore of the river Hooghly.

A closer look makes you realise that people live on the boats for long periods.

A couple of men on the boat. The river water looks muddy and dirty. Thick with pollution.
