Village women in Gwalior District, India

These are photographs of poor village women gathered together in Gwalior district, Madhya Pradesh. The contrasting colours of their saris and the way they are huddled together with their heads covered, make these pictures interesting. The pictures are not of a high resolution but are okay for web use.

In some parts of India it is customary for women to cover their heads with the pallav of the sarees.

The poverty of these women is evident, from their simple cotton sarees to their poor quality footwear, or lack of it.
